A Decade of Evolution: From Harvard-Affiliated Research to the Next Generation of NeuroRester

Sleep technology changes quickly. The harder thing is building on years
of research, learning and iteration. NeuroRester was not created from a single test, a single prototype, or a single moment in time.
Its story can be traced across two very different research milestones: an earlier-generation technology evaluated in a 2019 clinical pilot involving investigators from Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and the next-generation NeuroRester evaluated in a 2026 Kantar Home Use Test.

Different years. Different study designs. Different generations of technology.

But together, they tell a larger story: how an idea has continued to evolve from an early research setting into a system designed for real everyday life.

2019: Where the Research Journey Began

In 2019, the first-generation technology was evaluated in a 14-day clinical pilot involving Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital investigators. The study evaluated sleep using measures including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and ambulatory EEG, and the research was published in Nature and Science of Sleep.

For PSQI, the reported score moved from: 12.60 → 8.50 —a 4.10-point improvement over 14 days.
For us, that study represented an important early step. But it was never meant to be the final destination.

Technology evolves. Products evolve. And the way people expect wellness technology to fit into their lives evolves too.

2026: Bringing the Next Generation Into Real Life

Years later, Kantar evaluated the next-generation system in a very different environment: participants’ own homes.
The 2026 Home Use Test followed 51 U.S. Apple Watch users over 14 nights. Participants first completed a seven-night baseline period, followed by seven nights using the product. In total, the study collected 714 person-nights of sleep diary data. Each participant was compared with their own baseline rather than with another group.

This mattered because the question had changed.

It was no longer simply: “Can this technology be studied?”
It was: “What happens when people actually live with it?”

The result: participants reported meaningful changes in their sleep
experience. Global PSQI decreased from: 8.39 → 6.00 after seven product nights, a 2.39-point reduction (p<0.001).

And importantly, this was not driven by only a few participants:
71% — 36 of 51 participants — improved their Global PSQI score.
Morning sleep diaries told a similar story. The six-item sleep experience score increased from 2.94 to 3.23, a 9.8% relative improvement, with five of the six individual measures reaching statistical significance. And by the end of the test:
73% reported at least some perceived improvement in sleep.
35% first noticed a change within the first three days.

From 14 Days to 7: What Technology Evolution Can Look Like
One way to view the two research milestones is through the rate of PSQI improvement relative to the active use period.

In the 2019 study, the reported relative PSQI improvement was 32.5% over 14 days, equivalent to approximately 2.32% per study day.
In the 2026 Kantar study, relative PSQI improvement was 28.5% over seven product days, equivalent to approximately 4.07% per study day.
When normalized by active use days, this comparison illustrates a substantially higher rate of daily PSQI score reduction for the next-generation system.

That does not mean the two studies are clinically equivalent. They used different designs, participant groups and testing environments, so they should not be treated as a head-to-head trial. But as a story of technological progression, the comparison is meaningful: the research journey did not stop with the first generation. It continued.

The Difference Between Monitoring Sleep and Working Toward Better Sleep

Today, millions of people already have access to sleep data.
Wearables can tell us how long we slept, when we woke up, how much REM sleep was recorded, or how our heart rate changed overnight.
NeuroRester was developed around a different ambition: to move the conversation beyond simply monitoring sleep toward actively supporting
the nightly experience of rest and recovery. The Kantar results are especially interesting here. Participants reported better sleep experiences, yet the ten Apple Watch metrics remained statistically stable over the seven-night product period. Five moved directionally in a favorable direction, but none reached statistical significance. That distinction matters. NeuroRester should not be described as a device that guarantees a specific change in wearable metrics.


Instead, the strongest evidence from the Kantar study is about what people themselves experienced: easier sleep, better mornings, greater sleep satisfaction and an overall perception of improvement.

Built Through Iteration, Not Overnight

Perhaps the most important number in this story is not 73%. It is not 71%.
It is the time between generations. From an earlier technology studied in a clinical research environment to a next-generation system tested by Kantar in everyday homes, NeuroRester represents a continuing process of research, redesign and learning. The 2026 study also showed where there is still work to do. Participants reported issues around fit, slippage, comfort and charging, and Kantar specifically identified wear experience as an area that could limit recommendation. That feedback matters just as much as the positive results. Because real technology evolution is not about claiming perfection. It is about testing, learning, improving—and testing again.
